Story
When maple syrup farmer Ruth Landry has her livelihood attacked by greedy competitors who were once her friends, she hatches a plan to get revenge and shake up the industry. I want to start by mentioning that I went into this show with medium to low expectations, so there were no major disappointments or any real surprises.
I knew about the real maple heist, I saw the preview, and I thought it would be a fun watch
And it can be a fun watch, if you like bad Fargo heists by people who don’t understand any of the functional ingredients of Coen brother films. And I guess you could say that all the little elements they’ve pilfered from other films could be homages and tips of the hat, if they didn’t feel so awkwardly and inappropriately confident in their own uniqueness.
It’s someone else’s work that’s been rehashed over and over again
There’s a certain smugness to the writing and directing that, frankly, isn’t deserved. It’s the end of the game of telephone, and the catchphrase is almost unrecognizable.
Mean, homely, bad-ass, weird-bad-ass
The only real appeal of the show, the one that kept me watching, was the cast. They give it 100%, even if all the characters are the same archetypes these actors always play these days.
It seems like certain cast members can’t escape the cast that’s trapped them
